21. Some more pictues of the first day

The contact with Austin people throughout the day was interesting. Their kindness and open mind is warming and nothing related to the cold and suspicious temperament typical of the big cities. Somehow it reminds me of the difference between Oporto and Lisbon people. Lisbon inhabitants are much more closed and hard to get their trust while Oporto’s are much more welcoming and warming, always ready to say what they think and to help in what is needed without any complications (ok, this comparison as the worth it as each person is an individual...)

John, Billy and Curly were some of the people that I got to know throughout the day. John was the Stage Manager at St. David’s Church and, throughout the afternoon and night he was trying to get the best conditions for the upcoming concerts. He offered to find a video projector that ended up by being used at the Clã and Nicole’s concerts which would cost around 60$ or 70$ in rental, but he ended up by getting it for free. I recall that at a certain time telling that when he was younger he quit the job he had as a programmer because he wanted more out of life and when to live in LA, working at a pizza place or something like that. A year later he came to Austin. He tried to improve the lighting inside the church for the concerts, unfortunately without much success which made it a nightmare to take good pictures. I even photographed with flash when I ate it to use it.. it completely un-characterizes the environment in which you’re photographing.

I shared a cab with Nicole from Austin to the Hotel. Curly, its driver over 50 years old was extremely nice after some “shyness” and we had a completely unpredictable conversation about music, internet and photography for 45 minutes. When he found out that Nicole has some musicians at MySpace and while he waited for me at the Hotel, he tried to listen to them through his PDA although without success. He left us his contact for whatever we needed while in Austin! I took a picture of his cab which you can see lower on the screen and we agreed for me to send it to him by e-mail.

Bill Harvey, one of the many Austin musicians. He was playing before the Clã but, since he lent the drums to the band that was playing after Nicole, He had to stay until 1am waiting for them to end playing. He still didn’t quite know how he had agreed to lend them the drums. It just recalled getting an e-mail from Canada of the band which would be playing at 12pm enquiring if he could help them in their participation at SXSW’09. We were in the backstage for a while talking about music. I showed him the Tigerman and David Fonseca’s MySpace and he identified himself with both, since he has a sound that is a bit in between theirs, and then commented that perhaps he’ll have a peek at one of the Paulo Furtado concerts.

Well, enough of dissertations. Here are some more pictures. As for the concerts, I’ll post tem online in separated later.

One more of Austin's character.

E 6th Street.

On the lower right corner of this picture is a girl with seemed to have Multiple Sclerosis, sat in a wheel chair with a flower jar in her hand..I didn’t understand if it was somebody’s very bad joke but I didn’t feel comfortable to get closer and photograph…

More of the E 6th Street.

Uma das paralelas à E 6th Street, completamente deserta...

The picture of the day..although it doesn’t show much of the SXSW’09. I was trying to photograph the Pedicabs which are very common here, by making some time delayed pictures. While none showed up, this motorbike passed and I tried to capture it. The camera “jammed” for a second and didn’t shoot straight away but I continued to follow the motorbike and when the camera responded, it froze almost perfectly the motorbike movement. The way the girl is clinging makes the rest of the picture…

The Woofer this car had installed made the entire chassis to shake..it made a sound that made you believe that everything would disassemble anytime.

The hotel shuttle.
